The
Rotary International gearwheel emblem is the one graphic element that
universally identifies Rotary clubs and their members in every corner of
the world. It carries a proud tradition and a history going back to
1919. Because of the gearwheel’s
importance as the symbol for all of Rotary, it should be the concern of
all Rotarians to protect the integrity of the emblem. The Rotary
International name and emblem along with the other trademarks of Rotary
International are referred to as the
“Rotary
Marks.”* |

Rotary
International is the worldwide owner of the Rotary Marks, including the
word, ROTARY. Guidelines promulgated by the RI Board of Directors allow
use by Rotary clubs, districts, and other Rotary entities following
these guidelines but no ownership rights in the marks are ever conveyed
to the clubs, districts, or other Rotary entities. Therefore, no Rotary
club, Rotary district, or other Rotary entities should ever apply for
formal trademark or copyright protection on anything that includes any
of the Rotary Marks, but should first consult the Secretariat. RI
secures appropriate trademark and copyright registrations throughout the
world that should protect the right to use the Rotary Marks by Rotary
clubs, districts, and other Rotary entities. RI policy regarding use of
the Rotary Marks is set forth in detail in chapter 19 of the Manual of
Procedure. |

Given the emblem’s importance as the symbol for all of Rotary, certain
restrictions must be observed in order to protect its integrity. When

The RI emblem may not be altered, modified, or obstructed in any way,
nor reproduced other than in its complete form.

The RI emblem can be printed in any single color. However, when the RI
emblem is printed in more than one color, it must be in its official
colors of royal blue and gold or metallic gold. The technical
description of the colors is found in the PANTONE® Color Formula Guide
of colors. These are PANTONE® 286 for royal blue and PANTONE® 871 for
metallic gold. If a metallic gold is not feasible, a permissible
substitute would be the nonmetallic gold PANTONE® 129.

District
governors should use the proper RI emblem and encourage Rotary clubs
in their district to do the same. If you discover an improper
RI emblem on a club’s letterhead, bring it to the club’s attention and
advise the club to correct the emblem the next time it reprints its
letterhead.

Camera-ready examples of the RI emblem, including the use of colors for
the emblem, are available free from your RI office. The RI Publication
Order Services Section sells a transferable emblem sheet of the RI
emblem (237) or a disk version for IBM-compatible computers (234D-MU) or
Macintosh computers (234M-MU). The emblem can also be downloaded from RI’s
Web site (www.rotary.org). Emblems of many of the RI and Rotary
Foundation programs also can be found in program handbooks or ordered as
proofsheets. |

The most
common improper reproductions of the RI emblem have the keyway missing
from the center, the center of the wheel filled in, or the emblem
partially covered. The wheel should always be used in its entirety (see
appendix 2: Unacceptable Emblem Reproductions). Proper use of the
approved emblem will help to establish and strengthen the visual
identity that Rotary International seeks throughout the world as well as
to protect this valuable trademark. Refer to the Visual Identity Style
Manual (547).

Any time
the Rotary name and emblem are used by themselves without a qualifier
(such as the name of the club, district, or multidistrict group), they
refer to the parent organization, Rotary International, and may
incorrectly imply at least some involvement of the international
association. The RI Board, therefore, asks that clubs and districts
always use the club name or district number in conjunction with the
Rotary name and emblem (e.g.,
“Rotary
District 0000 Tree-Planting Program”).
If the Rotary emblem or the name
“Rotary”
is used, the name of the club or district should be placed nearby, and
in equal prominence with, the Rotary name and/or emblem. In that way,
the entity sponsoring, endorsing, or otherwise involved with a project
is properly identified and gets the credit. |

established a licensing system. The system currently maintains more than
180 individuals, Rotary clubs, and corporations as official licensees
for an array of products. |

Any
individual or company wishing to manufacture, reproduce in any way, or
sell goods containing the Rotary name, emblem, or any of the other
Rotary Marks (all collectively referred to as
“Rotary
emblem merchandise”)
must be licensed by RI (unless otherwise specifically authorized by RI).
Any unauthorized reproduction or sale of the RI emblem, in any form,
infringes on RI’s
trademark rights. By licensing vendors or manufacturers of Rotary-type
goods, RI maintains control over reproduction and/or sale of its
intellectual
property. This control helps to maintain a consistent quality in the
reproduction of the Rotary emblem and other Rotary Marks. |

Because
clubs and districts often want to use Rotary Marks on sale merchandise
to raise funds for their projects, the RI Board of Directors has
authorized a limited exception to licensing. Under this event-specific
fundraising exception, Rotary clubs and districts may sell merchandise
bearing Rotary Marks without an RI license when they are promoting club
or district projects, provided that in addition to the Rotary emblem,
the merchandise contains
1. The
name of the club or district
2. The
name of the fundraising project
3. The
date or duration of the fundraising effort |

three of these event-specific markings must be used on the product for
sale in similar proportion to and accompanied by the Rotary Mark(s) (see

should be manufactured by a vendor authorized to reproduce the Rotary

be answered by the Licensing Section at RI World Headquarters. |

RI urges
all Rotary clubs and districts wishing to pursue a fundraising effort
that involves the resale of merchandise to purchase such merchandise
only from Rotary International Official Licensees, as only Official
Licensees are authorized to reproduce and sell goods bearing the Rotary
Marks. A list of Official Licensees is published annually in the green
pages of the RI Official Directory. However, new licenses are issued
throughout the year. Rotary clubs and districts can confirm that an
individual or firm is licensed by RI by consulting the list posted on RI’s
Web site. |
