A critical part of your role as governor is to oversee membership growth
and development in the clubs in your district. In order to succeed in
this effort, clubs must be able to identify obstacles or challenges and
implement appropriate strategies. Aid your clubs in this task by working
with district leaders and club presidents to create successful
membership development action plans. |
Membership Development Committee |
Appoint a well-qualified and membership-oriented Rotarian to be the
district membership seminar committee chair. Work with the chair to
select enough members for the committee to provide adequate attention to
each club in the district. Some districts have had success with one
committee member for every four clubs. Develop a plan in your district
for how committee members will work with assistant governors on
membership development and retention issues. |
Communication |
As the liaison between clubs and RI, governors must ensure the regular
flow of information between RI and its clubs. This communication system,
between you and your RI membership coordinator, RI membership zone
coordinators, district membership seminar committee, assistant
governors, and club leaders, is essential to successful membership
growth and development in your district. To facilitate the flow of
membership information to the club level, encourage club presidents to
appoint club membership development chairs. |
Establishing a reporting system for membership information, from the
clubs in the district to Rotary International, will allow you to measure
progress toward established membership goals. This information should be
reported to your district’s RI membership coordinator by the club
president or club membership development chair. Ensure that the
assistant governors or members of the district membership seminar
committee receive this information as well. In addition to reporting
membership information in your monthly letter, feature membership
development and retention success stories that other clubs in your
district can implement.

Sharing Resources with Clubs |
As governor, you have access to a wide array of membership development
resources. It is your responsibility to make use of and distribute those
resources that are relevant and appropriate to clubs in your district
through direct communication with your clubs as well as through your
district leadership team. Membership development resources can also be
disseminated to club members through the following events: |
|
-
District membership seminar
— see the appendix at the end of this chapter for more information
-
Club assembly
presentation conducted by the district membership seminar committee to
emphasize the three components of membership development
|
|
-
Club visits
by the governor or assistant governor during which membership
publications are highlighted, such as the Membership Development
and Retention Manual (417) and Strategies for Member Education
(Web only)
-
Continuing education membership seminars
at the district level that promote personal involvement of Rotarians
in club and district projects, encourage the proposal of new members,
and address other issues important to membership
|
Clubs can support membership growth and development in three distinct
ways:
1. Retention of current members
2. Recruitment (proposal of new members)
3. Organization of new clubs |
|
|
Club Membership Goals and Action Plans |
Mentor club leaders as they develop membership development action plans
that include goals and strategies from each of the three areas:
retention, recruitment, identifying opportunities for new clubs.
Encourage assistant governors and district membership seminar committee
members to offer their assistance to clubs as they develop and work
towards membership goals. |
Include time at the presidents-elect training seminar (PETS) for club
presidents-elect to begin to set realistic club membership goals using
the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs (found in chapter
12 of this manual) and start creating an action plan to meet those goals.
Encourage club presidents-elect to discuss membership goals with
other club leaders and be prepared to report the goal at the district
assembly. In order to help club leaders understand their membership
trends, provide them with five-year membership histories of their club.* |
Consider promoting a district-wide membership development competition or
other program to spark interest in membership growth among clubs in your
district. |
Membership growth and development at the club level requires the support
of the entire district leadership team. Effective district public
relations and relevant service projects will aid clubs in their efforts. |
*
*
Five-year membership histories are available from your RI club and
district administration representative. You will receive additional
information on these reports at the governors-elect training seminar
(GETS). |
