Although each district governor-elect has a strong Rotary background, he
or she also needs careful and extensive preparation for serving in
office. Few Rotarians have been exposed to the wide range of situations
they will encounter as a district governor. |
In preparing for your year as governor, you are encouraged to work with
the current district governor to gain a better understanding of your
future responsibilities. Use the resources available to you to prepare
for the governors-elect training seminar (GETS) and the International
Assembly. Look to the current district governor and other qualified
present or past officers to provide guidance in your preparation for
these training meetings either at formal or informal training sessions. |
As experience is often the best education, the Board recommends that the
district governor give specific responsibilities to the governor-elect
in connection with district committees or district organization. This
experience will help you plan, well in advance of taking office, for
district committees and a district organization that will best meet the
needs of your district and its clubs and also help you in your role as
district governor. Remember to give these opportunities to your
successor when you begin your term as governor. |
It is the responsibility of the district governor-elect to schedule and
conduct the presidents-elect training seminar, the district assembly,
and the district team training seminar. Governors-elect, per Board
recommendation, should attend all district meetings as observers or
official participants. When you are governor, make sure that you involve
your successor in the district conference, membership development
seminar, district Rotary Foundation seminar, and district leadership
seminar programs in some capacity. (For more information on the
suggested training schedule, refer to the chart in chapter 5.) |
This manual makes many references to basic Rotary documents, which are
identified by their publication numbers for ordering purposes. Take time
now to read two chapters in the Manual of Procedure — chapter 2,
“The District,” and chapter 3, “Rotary International” — to learn the
specific definitions and duties of the district governor and the
governor’s relationship to the RI Board. You should begin using the
Manual of Procedure (035), the Official Directory (007), and
other Rotary publications as training and reference tools as soon as
possible so you will be able to access information readily during GETS
and the International Assembly and during your year as district
governor. |
