After he was asked to speak to his Rotary club about Paul Harris in 1995, George Atwell avidly read My Road to Rotary and every other Harris book he could find When it came time for his talk, he began, "My name is Paul Percy Harris, and I was born in Racine, Wisconsin ..." He has been giving his 25-minute Harris monologue, leavened with humor, to enthusiastic audiences ever since.

Atwell concentrates on Harris's early years, from Racine to Wallingford, Vermont, to university and law school to the "five years of folly" (Harris's career and travel adventures). "People know what came after 1905," says Atwell, a past governor of District 7610 (Virginia, USA). "I want them to know his formative years and the impetus they provided for a different kind of club."

James Young, past governor of District 5320 (California, USA), has been doing his own impersonation of Paul Harris since 1991, giving more than 350 performances at Rotary events throughout the United States and abroad, including the Paul Harris Fellows luncheon at the Calgary convention in 1996. In early 1900s attire, Young bears more than a passing resemblance to Rotary's founder. He relates that, after one performance, a man told him, "I knew Paul Harris, and you are a lot more like him than he was."

Like Atwell, Young has a theater background. His first performances also dealt with Harris's early life, but he has expanded his repertoire and adapts it to specific audiences. He says he wants to convey Harris's humanity and what was important to him: "fellowship, helping to make the world a better place, the Foundation, and encouraging others to join Rotary."

Young hopes more Rotarians will become Harris impersonators. "A lecture about Paul is not as effective as an impersonation," he says.
