Organized by Rotary clubs in Egypt, members of a recent weeklong medical convoy to Khartoum, Sudan, performed nearly 300 procedures on underprivileged Sudanese, ranging from cataract surgeries to pediatric treatments for heart disease. Ten medical specialists on the team also held educational seminars for local doctors on the latest surgical techniques in their fields. The World Community Service project, hosted by the Rotary Club of Khartoum, was organized and supported by clubs throughout District 2450 (Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, and United Arab Emirates). It followed an earlier district ophthalmology mission to Sudan. The Rotary Club of Muthaiga, in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Kenyan government have jointly opened an employment center in Nairobi. The JobConnect Career and Placement Centre aims to help 2,500 university graduates find jobs in 2003 and reduce the nation's high unemployment rate. Rotarians will complement the center's activities with career information, job shadowing opportunities, mentoring, and awareness programs in AIDS, drugs, and alcohol. The initiative builds on a pilot project begun by the Muthaiga club in 1997, which counseled 15,000 graduates and helped 2,000 of them find employment. The Rotary Club of San Francisco de Borja, Peru, is sponsoring a Rotary Community Corps (RCC) comprised of people with disabilities.
