|
When Polkrit "Art" Thomya traveled from Thailand (District 3350) to England (District 1140) to spend a year as an Ambassadorial Scholar, the world became his stage. While studying at the University of London's Royal Holloway College, Thomya made friends from many nations, helped organize a memorable International Night on campus, built relationships with host counselors and Rotarians, and raised funds for local charities. Since Thomya returned home, the stage has become his world. In late 2002, he performed in a Bangkok production of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, with an international cast. He was a lead singer in the 2003 staging of The River of Kings, an annual sound-and-light production telling stories of the kings of Thailand. Proceeds from the shows paid for scholarships for underprivileged students and treatment for autistic children. Mindful of his ambassadorial role, Thomya has also been speaking to Thai Rotary clubs. He took part in a District 3350 conference and is scheduled to participate in the RI Convention in Brisbane, Australia. Thomya was a member of the first class to benefit from The Rotary Foundation's Scholarships Fund Pool for Low-Income Countries, which annually funds approximately 20 scholarships awarded on a world-competitive basis. The pilot program, which began in 2001-02 and continues through 2003-04, encourages Rotarians to increase educational opportunities for candidates from low-income countries.
