Most schoolchildren in Binxian County in northwest China's Shaanxi Province learn from village teachers who lack formal training in their profession. Expanding on a five-year tradition of aiding education in the area by funding and supervising the building of 16 schools, the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, New South Wales, Australia, is helping teachers upgrade their skills.

Working with the Chinese Association for International Understanding, Crows Nest Rotarians carried out a Rotary Foundation Helping Grant project in 2001 that trained 1,100 primary school teachers and provided reference books, desks, chairs, and funds to enable 250 children to stay in school. A similar effort, launched in late 2002, is extending these improvements to other schools in the area.

Although primary education is compulsory in China, poorer families are unable to pay even the small fees required, compelling them to take their children out of school. Scholarship support from the Crows Nest club is an important means of helping children continue their education and build toward a future unshackled by poverty.

The projects are having a lasting effect on the quality of education in Binxian County. A self-study teacher training program aided by a Helping Grant in 2000, for example, was so successful that it was adopted by the Binxian Education Department, allowing the club to shift support to other county educational needs. The club is also expanding its efforts to include health care projects in 2003.

"Our members have made countless presentations of our projects to other Rotary clubs in Australia and overseas and to other organizations," said Crows Nest Rotarian Bjorn Kollberg who, along with past club president Bill Lee, has made many on-site visits to the projects. "As a result, considerable support has been received from private donors, the Australian government, and RI in addition to the contributions from our club."
