At a meeting with local Rotarians, 10 former Rotaractors in Australia said they would not consider joining a Rotary club because of, among other reasons, the cost of membership, the requirement to attend meetings weekly, and a generation gap with older Rotarians. But one year later, those same reluctant ex-Rotaractors were among the 24 charter members of The Hills Rotary Club, near Sydney, New South Wales.

The former Rotaractors changed their minds after learning about the New Models for Rotary Clubs pilot project in discussions over several months with District 9680 Rotarians. Approved by the RI Board after authorization by the 2001 Council on Legislation, the project allows participating clubs to relax some rules, an experiment aimed at attracting younger busy leaders.

The Hills Rotary Club, one of 191 New Models in the pilot project, meets only twice a month without a formal dinner, though members who wish to can enjoy a meal and fellowship before the meeting. Also, in contrast to a traditional club, members pay a meeting fee of only A$5 (approximately US$2.80).

Rotary Down Under, the regional Rotary magazine, reports that the club has enabled current and former Rotaractors to see Rotary in a new light and, through their membership, put their Rotaract training to work for the benefit of Rotary, the community, and themselves. To get members more involved, everyone serves either on the club board or a club committee.
