Background

Illiteracy lies at the root of poverty, ranking as one of the main impediments to earning a living wage.  An estimated one billion people, three fifths of them women, lack the literacy and numeracy skills needed to hold a job, or get a better one.  Helping people to learn these skills and become self-sufficient is one of the best tools for fighting poverty.

The CLE method was developed in Australia and, following a Rotary 3H grant project, has been successfully introduced throughout Thailand, where literacy rates have improved from 20% to 90%.  Subsequent Rotary CLE projects have been carried out with over 100 Matching Grants in Bangladesh, South Africa, Brazil, Nepal, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico, Argentina, Vanuatu, Turkey and Egypt.

Opportunities

In Gujarat, north-west India, RIBI has funded the building and/or reconstruction of over 130 schoolrooms, following the disastrous earthquake that devastated a vast area in January 2001.  In total, 181 villages have had new schoolrooms and there is now a great need for benches and educational supplies.  Ideally every school would like to own a computer.  Donations can be remitted through the Rotary Gujarat Earthquake Rebuild Trust (RGERT).

There is also a great shortage of teachers in India.  More information about an innovative project that enables 3 week exchanges for teachers in the UK and India can be obtained from PDG Sunil K. Zachariah via email at: sunilzach@yahoo.com

D1040 has, since 1998, been working with D9270, in Kwa Zulu Natal, following a US$270,000 3H Grant.  The project trains volunteer teachers to teach especially women and rural inhabitants, and introduces computer based literacy and numeracy instruction into existing schools and five prisons.  D1040 is extending the literacy project to work alongside craft classes, to enable adults to develop a means of earning a living.  The next venture is a family learning pilot scheme in the Drakensberg, teaching literacy to grandmothers and children.

Literacy projects in Nepal have been set up, with the aid of Matching Grants, by: Burntisland and Kinghorn RC (D1010) (specifically to help women); Galtway-Salthill RC (D1160) working with The Nepal Trust; and Sutton Coldfield RC (D1060) to build and equip a new school with 14 classrooms for 400 children, in partnership with Kathmandu North RC.  

Blackpool Marton RC (D1190) sent 300 Classrooms in a Box to Indonesia.  Church and Oswaldthistle (D1190) has sent a 40ft. container loaded with hospital and school supplies to Uganda through Entebbe RC.  D1260 is working with School Aid to provide books and assorted school materials in Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone and Eritrea, Ethiopia and South Africa, and through LabAid (refurbished science equipment for schools) in Africa.
