Bali Rotarians, blood bank save lives |

Bali Rotarians, blood bank save lives Members of the 10 Rotary clubs on the Indonesian island of Bali scrambled to help with rescue efforts following the 12 October 2002 car bombing of a nightclub that killed more than 180 people and injured 300, mostly foreign tourists.
Rotarians worked around the clock to provide English language translation assistance to local hospital personnel and to mobilize blood donors. They also coordinated donations of funds and equipment, mainly syringes, from Indonesian Rotary clubs and provided food for hundreds of volunteers working at health facilities and the scene of the deadly blast.
The Bali Blood Bank, which has been renovated and equipped with Rotary Foundation Matching and 3-H Grants, became a valuable asset in efforts to save lives after the attack. Thanks to the foresight of the Rotarian coordinators of the project, who had insisted on a commitment of resources to procure a supply of all blood types, the blood bank was prepared to deal with a medical emergency involving so many injured foreigners.
If it had not been for the blood bank, things would have been "a lot worse," according to Freddy Subiyanto, a past District 3400 (Indonesia) Group Study Exchange team leader, whose exchange with District 6290 (Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA) in 1998 resulted in the blood bank project. In addition to District 6290 clubs, Canadian and Japanese Rotarians also contributed to the effort, which included training of blood bank personnel.
As foreign victims of the explosion were evacuated to neighboring countries, Rotary volunteers helped mobilize resources to help injured local people, many of them too poor to pay their medical bills. Rotarians throughout Australia raised substantial funds to help survivors and victims' families.
