Helping the hungry in Panama feed and support their families

Two poultry-breeding projects in Panama are going beyond their goal of helping low-income families improve their nutrition. By teaching entrepreneurial skills and planting the seeds of self-esteem, these Matching Grants-assisted projects are enabling families to hatch plans to escape dire poverty.

The first project began after Rotarians from Kansas, USA, who were in Panama delivering food, recognized the value of supporting a food production project. The project - sponsored by the Rotary clubs of David, Panama; Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and Kansas districts 5670 and 5690, and assisted by the Panamanian Ministry of Health - supplied 57 families with chicks, tools, and seed for feed corn, vegetables, and fruit trees.

When the Kansas Rotarians returned to Panama, the successful farmers had on display eggs, cabbage, cucumbers, beans, and much more. "The people were proud of their achievements and showed their gratitude; we had four meals before lunch one day," says Bill Grimes, District 5670 Grants Subcommittee chairman. Another Matching Grant provided the farmers with a tiller.

Another 36 families are benefiting from a poultry-raising project sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Panamá Oeste and Palo Alto, California, USA, in cooperation with the Caritas agency. Eventually, the project will reach 72 families. Along with animal husbandry, the project emphasizes leadership development and joint efforts to augment yields. One lesson already demonstrated: a central henhouse built by the community rather than individual families sharply reduces the mortality rate and theft of hens.

"One thing we did not need to teach them was hard work," says Julian Rosales, Community Service Committee chairman of the Panamá Oeste club. "These families work very hard to make ends meet. Through this project, they learned a way to get rewarded for their hard work." With earnings from the sale of their first chicks, some families promptly expanded their operations.
