Polio eradication accelerates in remaining at-risk countries

The stepped-up drive to secure a polio-free world continues to intensify in those countries where the disease threatens most.

In Pakistan, Rotarians, health workers, and other volunteers reached an estimated 30 million children under age five during National Immunization Days (NIDs) held in September 2002. Rotarians helped plan, promote, and monitor the NIDs, as well as transport vaccine and volunteers to immunization sites.

In neighboring Afghanistan, a September house-to-house polio eradication campaign launched by the health ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) immunized 5.9 million children under age five.

A massive campaign in Indonesia vaccinated more than 20 million children during National Immunization Week in September. Five million health workers, including many of the country's 1,548 Rotarians, took part in the effort. Although Indonesia has reported no polio cases since 1995, the campaign was undertaken at WHO's recommendation due to the risk of imported cases from polio-endemic India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Rounds one and two of the West African synchronized NIDs took place on 5 October and 9 November, respectively, except for Côte d'Ivoire, where participation was postponed because of civil strife.

"In Cotonou [Benin], caravans of motorcycle taxis, sponsored by Rotary, took off in all directions, the drivers dressed in their traditional yellow blouses emblazoned with Rotary logos and an exhortation to eradicate polio," says National PolioPlus Committee Vice Chairman Ashok Mirchandani. "I managed to vaccinate more than 30 children in five minutes during the launching ceremony."

In another important achievement, the polio-endemic countries of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan are close to becoming polio-free, with only two cases reported in Somalia in 2002. In the first round of NIDs in Ethiopia on 25 October, 74,000 volunteers, including Rotarians, immunized more than 14 million children.
