Finances for 2001-02 reported |

A major decline in the value of stock market assets lowered reported income of both Rotary International and its Foundation in 2001-02. RI's investment losses amounted to US$4.3 million, while The Rotary Foundation's reached $40 million.
Rotary leaders emphasized that the investment losses, which occurred in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, were unrealized and temporary. The value of investments fluctuates but U.S. accounting standards require the reporting of the current value of marketable securities in year-end financial statements. Any decline in value from the beginning of the year must be reported as a loss.
Anticipating economic woes, RI had reduced its budgeted expenses by $7.0 million; still, the investment losses, plus a shortfall in RI Convention revenue and rising insurance premiums, among other factors, hurt the bottom line, resulting in a loss of $7.0 million.
Providing good news, the Foundation received $94.8 million in total contributions and pledges, an increase of $4.6 million over the previous year. Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund amounted to a record $67.5 million. The Foundation spent $95.7 million on programs.
