Rotarians are soaring to new heights in support of the polio eradication fundraising campaign (PEFC), Fulfilling Our Promise: Eradicate Polio, and its US$80 million goal. On 18 August 2002, 29 Rotarians, relatives, and friends made parachute jumps that raised more than US$23,000 for the campaign as part of an event hosted by the Rotary Club of Thorpe Bay, Essex, England.

"It started as a club project, but when our Assistant District Governor Sandra Allen heard about it she took it to District Governor Michael Dunne, who immediately signed up himself - at 62, the oldest jumper in our crew," says Nigel Gayner, junior vice president of the Thorpe Bay club. "District Governor Michael asked all clubs in District 1240 to participate, either by jumping themselves or sponsoring someone else to jump for them."

"We were freefalling through the air at about 120 miles [190 kilometers] per hour," wrote Carol Brown of the neighboring Rotary Club of Shenfield & Hutton in an article published by her employer, the Brentwood Borough Council, which sponsored her jump. "It was awesome, it was exhilarating, and it was like nothing else!"

More than halfway toward its 30 June completion, the one-year PEFC is garnering many sources of support. Rotary clubs in Japan, for example, have made a commitment to raise US$16 million. The 2002-03 RI Board of Directors is leading by example, with each member making a commitment to contribute. And the government of Canada will provide up to C$3 million (US$1.9 million), based on the Canadian Rotarians' pledge to raise C$9 million (US$5.7 million).
