President William B. Boyd honored innovative projects by
Rotaract clubs, which form an integral part of the family of
Rotary. As he presented the 2007 Outstanding Rotaract Project
awards, Boyd offered words of encouragement for Rotaractors to
forge on. |

The international winner was the Rotaract Club of the
University of Calgary, Canada, whose Project Nicaragua
provides composting bathrooms, water filters, eco-stoves, and
medical and dental care to rural communities in Nicaragua.

The club has set up five income-generating farms in rural parts
of Panama. A Matching Grant with District 9450 (Australia)
provided funding for the farms, which are expected to increase
the availability and variety of food in impoverished rural
areas. Rotaractor Alvaro Ortega Noel, 24, said the club's next
goal is to set up irrigation systems to more efficiently use
water. "In Panama, it rains nine months out of the year," he
noted, "so right now we're looking for an irrigation system and
for a sponsor. |
