Bricks House of Peace, located within the House of Friendship, features climbing walls, games, and other family attractions.

Salt Lake City — If there's one convention feature that is scoring a hit with Rotarian families, it's the 10,000 square-foot Bricks House of Peace exhibit displayed in the House of Friendship, where kids of all ages are playing games, climbing walls, and learning about the building blocks of peace.

Rotarians and their children are flocking to play miniature golf, Wii, air hockey, and a host of other games. They are also grabbing brushes to paint personal messages of peace on the 16 x 32 foot Peace Wall erected by the 2007 Salt Lake City Host Organization Committee. Dean L. Jackson, District 5420's incoming governor from Utah, and wife Marlys, inspired by the artwork on the remains of the Berlin Wall, wanted to bring the same concept of creative expression to Rotary's international community for the convention.

"We are creating an environment for children to openly and creatively think and express their concept of what peace looks like," says Jackson. "This is a unique cultural and international opportunity to bring the world to one spot for a short period of time, and to start the dialogue of peace at its most simplistic and grassroots level."

The Peace Wall is filling up fast with a kaleidoscope of colorful drawings and messages of peace. After playing air hockey with her friend, Elena Pleass, an 11-year old from Suva, Fiji, found her own small corner of the wall and began to draw.

"I think peace is everything," says Pleass. "We need to start to talk about peace now, so we don't grow up in a bad world."

This isn't just a kid's playground. Adults are taking the time to bond with their children by playing games and adorning the wall with their own messages. Jackson feels it's crucial for parents to encourage their children to become peace initiators.

"I want the Bricks House of Peace to close the disconnect between older Rotary generations and the future ones," says Jackson.

All the games, TVs, and furniture will be donated to a local Boys and Girls Club of Provo, Utah once the convention is over. As for Bricks and the Peace Wall, the Jacksons hope it becomes a lasting legacy at future RI conventions.

"The Peace Wall has to move with the times. The messages of peace have to be relevant and evolving," says Jackson. "Because of this area, kids will want to come to RI conventions. They will be able to better understand Rotary and help bring the message of peace to future Rotary generations."
