Salt Lake City — A group of handpicked participants from over 20 countries converged in Salt Lake City for International RYLA, the annual event that caps off the year for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program. The three-day event gives a select group of young leaders the chance to build international bonds while learning advanced leadership techniques through training sessions, group discussions, and inspirational guest speakers.

Rukayat A. Garba from Abere-Osogbo, Nigeria, a participant in other Rotary programs, called this year's International RYLA the pinnacle of her Rotary experience and an experience she couldn't miss. "I believe in Rotary. I was an Interactor, and now I'm a Rotaractor," says Garba proudly.

Garba was one of the 90 RYLArians selected by their home clubs and districts to attend the international gathering, which runs from 14-17 June. International RYLA is one of several youth-oriented Rotary events that precede the 2007 RI Convention, the largest annual gathering of the family of Rotary.

International RYLA takes leadership training to a new level for the participants. "This becomes the most positive experience they've ever had in their lives," says Rotarian Brian A. Anderson, who is the International RYLA chair. "We take them out of their comfort zones and teach them team building, self-awareness, and confidence."

It is also truly international, reflecting Rotary's diversity. "International RYLA really opens up your eyes to all different kinds of people from different backgrounds," says RYLArian Edwin Acevedo Jr., from Passaic, New Jersey, USA.

A former RYLArian and now, at 32, a Rotary club president, Ola Zätterström is one of 18 Rotarian counselors who helps guide the young participants during the event. "There are so many different flavors of RYLA," says Zätterström, who is from Östersund, Sweden. "For some clubs, it's really like a mentorship program. It's also one of the most powerful public relations tools we have in Rotary."

It's one of Rotary's fastest-growing programs, too. Each year as part of their local RYLA activities, thousands of people ages 14 to 30 attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership in their communities. RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs.

The success of International RYLA, says Anderson, is due in large part to the real-world leadership skills Rotarian instructors provide as business leaders and mentors.
