Carl-Wilhelm
Stenhammar |
Rotary
International President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar yesterday met the
members of the Philippine press to talk Rotary. |
|
The highest
official of R.I. was warm and amiable, but at the same time very
thankful for the opportunity to explain Rotary’s work to his small
audience. |
|
“Rotary
works for the better understanding among peoples and for peace,” he
started, adding that the oldest service organization in the world has
been working with the United Nations on the goal of eradicating polio
worldwide. This working relationship he rated as “very successful”. |
|
Pres Carl
also stressed his belief in “cooperation and continuity” in order to
address the issues that Rotary is concerned with. “The problems cannot
be solved overnight,” he explained, “therefore, we need continuity and
cooperation.” On the status of the Polio eradication program of Rotary
called PolioPlus, the Swedish gentleman said, “We are not there yet but
we are very, very close.” |
|
He also
cited the tremendous surveillance system of the United Nations which is
able to detect where a polio virus has originated from; and that some
Rotary clubs are managing some of such surveillance laboratories. |
|
In a candid
moment, Pres Carl gave the members of the media the reason why water is
a major concern in his administration. He said there is a long-running
debate between him and his wife Monica as to what is the barest need of
man. His answer is education while hers is water. “And she is about to
win,” he said. |
|
Pres Carl
explained that his work as president takes him both in the boardroom as
well as out in the communities. He expressed his personal preference to
meet and talk with Rotarians in the field and with government people.
This interaction with the Rotarians and their communities, he said, has
so far nothing short of “amazing” |
|
Pres Carl
is the first president of Rotary International after it just celebrated
100 years of service last year. Asked if there is a pressure in his job
following such a celebratory year, he admitted: “There is pressure but
there is also the challenge.” |
|
He candidly
said that there were those who were asking him if he really was sure he
wanted to be the president to follow the centennial year. “I didn’t feel
it was bad,” he commented. “Rather I took it as a challenge. We are
writing the first chapter of Rotary’s next century, and we are setting
the pattern. What greater challenge can there be?” |
