Friends of Rotary, |
|
It is
a pleasure to be here, and to have been invited to visit your lovely
city of Taipei. Joan and I vividly remember our only visit in 1994
during the International convention when we stayed at the Hyatt
Hotel. We met so many of your member as you played host to the world of
Rotary. |
|
And
I’m proud to be addressing a district that I know has been involved in
so much good work. |
|
In the
last few months I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes Rotary what
it is. |
|
I
believe Rotary, at least in its ideal sense, is a love of persons for
other human beings. |
|
Love
is not something that belongs in the realm of reason. |
|
It is
not something that can be expressed in terms of formula or equations. |
|
It
cannot be captured within the legal phrasing of a contract, or
reflected on a balance sheet. |
|
To me,
Rotary is sharing. It is a movement in which people share of
themselves for the help of others. That is meant by service. |
|
When
we say “Service Above Self,” it is another way of saying that we are
prepared to love and share with those who travel on this planet with
us. |
|
We see
time after time in thousands of ways how our community is made better
by that sharing of our time, talent and, money. |
|
I’m
just one person. But through Rotary, I’ve been able to do some truly
extraordinary things. I’ve traveled places I never thought I’d go and
I’ve met some really amazing people I would never have met otherwise. |
|
I’ve
had the privilege seeing some amazing projects, and learning about
many more. Projects like you have run here in this district: |
|
Provide equipment and supplies for the Nan Zhang elementary and high
school in rural Mioli County,Taiwan. |
|
Helping to provide books, shelving, computer equipment and office
furniture to equip a mobile library vehicle in Hsinchu, Taiwan. |
|
And
helping to provide a water source supply and storage system for the
Hsikou Tribe in the Taoyoun County of Taiwan. |
|
You
donated generously to help the people of Slidell Louisiana, who were
ravaged by water and winds of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. |
|
I
really have seen quite a lot of amazing things that I would never have
seen if I hadn’t been asked to join a Rotary club 43 years ago. |
|
When I
think about that, it really does give me pause. I think, what if I had
never been asked? |
|
If I
hadn’t been asked, my wife, Joan, and I would have missed so much. We
would have missed the friends we’ve made, the places we’ve seen, and
the good work we’ve been a part of. I am so grateful now to the person
who invited me to join his Rotary club. |
|
Every
time I think of this, it reminds me of just how important it is to
invite new members into Rotary. |
|
So I
urge each of you, this very week, as proud Rotarians, to submit the
name of at least one prospective member and if they are approved then
go out and ask them to join, just as someone did for me in December
1962 and for each of you. They may come back in a year—or in
forty-three—and thank you for it. |
|
I am
confident that the story of service that has been written by the men
and women of this district, both past and present, will be surpassed
by you and those who follow you. In this work, I encourage you.
Rotarians, please remember that in this wonderful, bountiful world, we
still have those who are “hungry, lonely, and cold.” They can be found
in Canada, in the United States, and right here in Taiwan. They are
depending on me and they are depending on you. I know that you will
continue to hear their plea and will help them and for this I
congratulate you and I thank you. |
