敬愛的扶輪社員們：
Dear fellow Rotarians,
合作， 依我的見解，
是攸關扶輪未來的一個關鍵。所有我們所處理的問題都是龐大艱巨的問題：小兒痲痹、識字、飲水、保健及飢餓只是略舉其中幾項而已。這些問題我們無法單靠自己來解決，但藉由與他人合作我們可以獲致更大的進展。
Cooperation is, in my
opinion, one of the key words for the future of Rotary. All the issues that
we deal with are huge: polio, literacy, water, health, and hunger, just to
name a few. Issues that we cannot solve by ourselves, but can reach further
in cooperation with others.
然而，我們也無須捨近求遠。我們必須藉助國際扶輪及扶輪基金會結合其他達成善果的力量。
However, we do not have to
go outside our own building in order to cooperate. Rotary International and
The Rotary Foundation must join forces to reach good results.
最近，芝加哥論壇報以扶輪百週年為題訪問我。在訪談中，他要我舉出在我心目中扶輪第一個世紀有哪幾個日期特別突出。我回答：1905年、1917年、1947年、1970年代中期及2005年。接著我向記者解釋為何我挑選這些日期。
Quite recently, I was
interviewed by the Chicago Tribune because of Rotary’s 100th anniversary. At
one point the interviewer asked me to name a few years that could highlight
our first century. I answered 1905, 1917, 1947, mid-’70s, 1985, and 2005.
Then I expanded on why I had picked just those occasions.
訪問結束之後，我自己發現一些很有意義的事。在回答有關國際扶輪重要大事時，除了1905年及2005年──之外，所有其他我回答的日期都是扶輪基金會很有意義的時刻。1917年，是扶輪基金會開創的日子，那一年當時的國際扶輪社長柯藍夫ArchKlumph宣佈我們將接受設立基金的捐獻，目的是為了「在世界上行善」──扶輪基金會從此誕生。1947年，當扶輪創始人保羅•哈理斯於逝世時，扶輪社員們為懷念他而開始捐獻扶輪基金會。70年代中期，扶輪基金會在已有的教育計畫之外，另外增加了人道計畫，開始實施保健、防飢及人道（3-H）獎助金計畫，為世界各地的人們改善社會發展。1985年，當然了，是我們展開根除小兒痲痹等疾病(Polio-Plus)計畫的一年。
Afterward, I made a personal
observation. I was answering a question regarding highlighting Rotary
International, and all the years I mentioned, apart from 1905 and 2005,
reflected on The Rotary Foundation. The year 1917 was the start of our
Rotary Foundation, when then-RI President Arch Klumph announced that we
should accept endowments for doing good in the world – and The Rotary
Foundation was born. The year 1947 was when contributions started to come in
commemoration of the death of Paul Harris. The mid-‘70s was when
humanitarian programs were added to the Foundation’s hitherto educational
programs only, and the 3-H grants program was launched to improve social
development among people in the world. The year 1985 was, of course, when we
started our polio eradication program.
國際扶輪為扶輪基金會之母。有人會認為100歲的母親和88歲的女兒可以各自獨立生活。但，這是不可能的。在為女兒募集資金時，老母親可是重要無比；而老母親也無法花用募集來的捐獻──因為這是女兒分內的事。
Rotary International is the
mother of The Rotary Foundation. One would think that a mother 100 years old
could live independently from her daughter 88 years old. But this is not
possible. In raising funds for the daughter, the mother is of vital
importance and the mother has no way of spending the funds raised that’s for
the daughter to do.
這顯示國際扶輪和扶輪基金會之間的合作是多麼重要。當慶祝11月扶輪基金月時，祈願我們透過超我服務，讓兩者的合作關係繼續保持下去。
This shows how important
cooperation is between Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. May
it so remain when, through Service Above Self, we celebrate November as
Rotary Foundation Month.
