敬愛的扶輪社友, Dear fellow Rotarians, 在2 月的聖地牙哥的國際講習會,國際扶輪前社長暨扶輪基金會保管委員陳裕財做了一場精采的演講,講題為領導及激勵,演講中高舉了勇氣及膽識的重要性。 At the International Assembly in San Diego in February, Past RI President and Rotary Foundation Trustee Bhichai Rattakul gave an excellent speech on leadership and motivation, highlighting courage and daring. 今年,國際扶輪理事會已經展示出莫大的勇氣及膽識。儘管俄羅斯可能制定的法案會使得扶輪社難以成立,理事會還是決議在俄羅斯成立第一個扶輪地區。 勇氣及膽識的另一個例子是開放中國以供擴展扶輪,以及授證給北京及上海的二個臨時扶輪社,類似的決議還包括重返古巴,以及開放科索沃及越南來設立扶輪社。 This year, the RI Board of Directors has shown great courage and daring. In spite of possible legislation in Russia that would make it difficult for Rotary clubs to organize, the Board decided to form the first Rotary district in that country. The opening of China for extension and the chartering of the two provisional clubs in Beijing and Shanghai are further examples of courage and daring, as are the decisions to go back to Cuba and to open Kosovo and Vietnam to Rotary clubs. 然而,領導不只是勇氣及膽識而已。領導是要有能力跳出框框來思考。例如,扶輪社社長有時必須接受可能不是個人所喜歡但卻是多數人贊同的決議。地區總監有時需要接受一項不受自己扶輪社歡迎的決定,因為那才符合地區的最大利益。理事會的擔子特別沉重:即使每個理事都是從兩個地帶選出,重要的是理事必須為了國際扶輪的最大利益著想,而不只是為那二個地帶著想。理事有權在理事會會議室為那二個地帶說話,但論及決議時,必須考慮組織的利益。作為社長,我也必須接受許多可能非我中意的決定。這一點對我們組織的成長非常重要。 However, leadership is much more than courage and daring. It is the ability to think outside the box. For example, club presidents sometimes have to accept majority decisions that may not be personal favorites. District governors sometimes need to accept decisions that are not popular in their own clubs because they are in the best interest of the district. The Board has a particularly heavy burden: Even though each director is elected from two zones, it is vital that the director looks for what is best for Rotary International, not just the two zones. A director has the right to speak for two zones in the boardroom, but when it comes to decisions, the organization’s interests must be considered. As president, I too have had to accept many decisions that might not have been my cup of tea. That has been vital for the growth of our organization. 今天世界上有許多領導學派。我偏好目標領導。領導人與一群經理人一起決定目標;然後,在個人方面,每個成員都朝向共同的目標努力。我偏好的另一種領導技巧是授權。責任的授權顯示對同事有信心。授權之後,便由經理人去貫徹執行。 There are many schools of leadership in the world today. One approach I favor is leadership by objectives. Together with a group of managers, the leader decides on objectives; then, individually, each member works toward the mutually agreed objectives. Another leadership technique I favor is delegation. Delegation of responsibilities shows confidence in one’s colleagues. After delegation, managers can follow up on work as it proceeds. 一個優秀的領導人必須眼光放遠,超越個人利益或嫌惡。我們必須把生活的公私領域分開,才能兩邊都有斬獲。 A good leader must look beyond personal interest or aversion. One must separate the business side of one’s life from the personal side in order to achieve good results in both areas. 領導及激勵在扶輪極端重要。成功經常要根據勇氣及膽識。陳前社長,感謝您的金玉良言﹗ Leadership and motivation are extremely important in Rotary.
