After closely following the competition in a three-month silent auction for RI President Stenhammar's reversible jacket, Bruno Ghigi secured his win with a bid of US$5,000. The past president of the Rotary Club of Rimini Rivera, Italy, now becomes the new owner of the blue-and-gold jacket modeled by Stenhammar at the 2005 RI Convention.

Stenhammar hosted the auction at www.rotary.org to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation. After years of giving to the Foundation, the resident of the tiny European republic of San Marino is happy to get something in return. He and his wife, Marialba, are Major Donors and charter members of the Arch C. Klumph Society.

"Bruno Ghigi has been an extraordinary supporter of The Rotary Foundation," says John Osterlund, general manager. "He sees it as an effective way to address human needs in our world."

Ghigi has been a generous contributor in various ways to the Foundation. "He's given to the Annual Programs Fund and to the Solidarity in South Asia fund to help with the tsunami that struck Asia, and has established an endowed fund within the Permanent Fund," says Eric Schmelling, manager of Planned and Major Gifts.

He was also instrumental in raising funds for several Matching Grants that helped needy children in Albania, Brazil, and Argentina. "Some of these grants were financed by myself, but for many of them I collected the money among Rotarians from many clubs," says Ghigi.

As a result of networking within RI District 2070, Ghigi is often invited to speak about the Foundation at the club meetings. He believes it offers a great opportunity for every Rotarian to contribute to make the world a better place. "Through the Foundation, we can make the difference and the Permanent Fund is the tool we have to guarantee our action for many years to come," he says.

And as a personal acquaintance of the president, owning the jacket brings an added bonus for Ghigi. He is currently vice chair of the Permanent Fund Committee for Europe and Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI), and was a member of the committee in 2002-03, when Stenhammar chaired it.

"I met the president many times, but the one I remember with gratitude is when he came to visit some clubs in my district last year. About 600 Rotarians and their spouses attended, and we collected $63,000 for the Permanent Fund and PolioPlus," recalls Ghigi.

Stenhammer says he had been following the auction closely during his travels around the world. "We have worked together for many years," says Stenhammar. "When it turned out that the winning bidder was a good friend of mine, I was very happy."

The win represents more than just a tangible keepsake for Ghigi. He says he plans to sport his new jacket to promote the Foundation throughout his district. But will it fit, and which side of the jacket does he prefer? "I think it is near my size. If not, I will ask my tailor to fit it," says Ghigi. "I am not a thin man. The blue side will be more elegant."
