District Rotary Foundation Seminar

Fund Development

Two Needs, Two Ways of Giving

Description: Two Needs, Two Ways of Giving is TRF’s comprehensive fundraising message. The two needs are to financially support TRF’s wide range of programs today and to secure its programs for tomorrow. The two ways of meeting these needs, respectively, are giving to the Annual Programs Fund and the Permanent Fund. This message encompasses all forms of giving to TRF, from Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members and Benefactors to Major Donors, whose pictures hang in the Arch Klumph Gallery of Foundation Donors at RI World Headquarters.

How to Raise Money for The Rotary Foundation

結合聯邦宣傳運動Federal Campaigns(僅限美國)或聯美之路the United Way(僅限美國與加拿大)

Promote the Two Needs, Two Ways of Giving fundraising message.

The Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative encourages every Rotarian to participate in their Rotary Foundation by volunteering for Foundation programs and/or contributing to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund. Lead by example: Make your personal financial commitment and contribute US$100 or more each year to the Annual Programs Fund to become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member.

Ask for contributions of US$100 or more to the Annual Programs Fund from Every Rotarian, Every Year. Each club should have a Foundation contact who will personally ask each member of the club for a contribution.

Work to achieve the 2001 Council on Legislation’s endorsement of the US$100 per capita goal. If the districts is already at $100 per capita or more, consider a percentage increase. If the district is less than $100 per capita, consider ways to reach that level. Ensure that all clubs set an Annual Programs Fund goal in support of the district goal.

Seek Major Donor challenge gifts to help motivate Rotarians in the club or district to contribute to the Annual Programs Fund.

Encourage Rotarians to visit RI’s Web site, www.rotary.org, often.

Encourage every Rotarian to become a Benefactor by making The Rotary Foundation a beneficiary of his or her will or by contributing US$1,000 outright to the Permanent Fund.

Provide personal stories of how TRF has improved lives around the world.

Organize special events:

8K run/5K walk

Foundation dinners

Letter-writing campaigns

Auctions

Establish a Foundation speakers bureau in your district.

Pursue corporate employee matching gifts.

Consider voluntary monthly, quarterly, or annual  recurring contributions through TRF-Direct Donations (USA and Canada only).

Partner with combined federal campaigns (USA only) or the United Way (USA and Canada).

Why Support The Rotary Foundation?

With all of the problems we face here in our local communities, I don’t think that I should support international causes.”

While it is true that local communities have issues that should be addressed and that Community Service is an integral part of what Rotary stands for, Rotary International is also dedicated to solving problems worldwide. A community can greatly benefit from the exchanges of people from different cultures. International Service calls on all Rotarians to develop global friendships and undertake projects to build understanding and peace around the globe.

If I contribute to the Foundation, I do not know that my contribution will be used wisely.”

Whether it is helping a Polish child fight a deadly disease, assisting in creating a literacy program for Indian women, or providing the opportunity of a lifetime to a scholar or Group Study Exchange team member, you can be assured that your gift will touch the lives of people in your community or in another part of the world. Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are invested for three years before they are spent on the Foundation’s programs. Earnings from Annual Programs Fund investments help pay for fund development, general administrative expenses, and program expenses.

We have our own club foundation that I support.”

Many Rotary clubs have established their own private foundations that meet many of their local community’s needs. While Rotary International strongly supports community efforts, it also stresses the importance of service for international causes. A balance of support for both international and local community projects reflects the true ideals of Rotary service.

I don’t feel like I can give financially right now.”

Contributions in any amount are welcomed. There are many different ways that Rotarians can contribute financially without jeopardizing their economic stability. Some Rotarians give outright gifts of cash or appreciated stock, while others prefer to name The Rotary Foundation in their will or estate plan. Others make gifts that provide them an income during their lifetime. Rotarians may also choose to make smaller gifts monthly, quarterly, or annually through the TRF-Direct (electronic fund transfer and credit card recurring debiting) program. Rotarians have the capacity to give at various levels; the important thing to remember is that every contribution helps to support the Foundation’s programs.

I contributed to the Foundation last year.”

Every year there are thousands of needy people who do not benefit from TRF programs because of the lack of resources. To keep moving forward in the fight against hunger, disease, homelessness, illiteracy, and other serious problems, TRF depends on Rotarians’ continual contributions to the Annual Programs Fund. TRF calls on Every Rotarian  to make a contribution to the Annual Programs Fund Every Year to maintain the same level of support for existing programs and to enable TRF programs to grow.

I am afraid that too much of my contribution will go toward paying for operating, administrative, and fundraising costs instead of programs.”

TRF is consistently ranked in the top 50 charities for low fundraising costs by Money magazine and Forbes. By investing Annual Programs Fund contributions for three years, TRF is able to use the earnings to help offset administrative and fundraising costs.

I don’t want to ‘buy’ my Paul Harris Fellow Recognition.”

Many Rotarians feel that receiving Paul Harris Fellow Recognition through one’s own contribution is a way of “buying” recognition. This is simply not the case. Although clubs and individuals are encouraged to recognize others by naming them as Paul Harris Fellows, the emphasis should be placed on the individual’s personal support. A gift to TRF is a special way of making a difference in the life of another person in the world. TRF also offers many other types of recognition of Rotarians’ good work.

I’m not sure that the large bureaucratic Foundation will effectively and efficiently use my contribution.”

Although TRF is a large charity, it is also quite efficient. After it collects and processes the paperwork to ensure selection of quality projects for funding, implementation begins on hundreds of projects around the world. Due to the financial support from thousands of Rotarians and friends of TRF, every year approximately 1,000 scholars study abroad, some 250 Group Study Exchanges take place, over 1,500 Matching Grants are awarded, and scores of other efforts are undertaken to improve the lives of people worldwide. Rotarians around the world also serve as a cadre of volunteers to help ensure that contributions are used wisely and for the purpose they were intended.

My contribution will never make a difference.”

If every Rotarian felt that his/her contribution did not make a difference, there would be no Ambassadorial Scholars, no Group Study Exchange participants, no Matching Grants, no Rotary Volunteers, nor any other TRF programs. Collectively, Rotarians make a huge difference in our world. Every TRF contribution is appreciated and brings us one step closer to world understanding and peace.

The Rotary Foundation Annual Report shows assets of over US$540 million. Why do Rotary district leaders continue to ask for more support for TRF when we have this level of assets invested in the bank?”

It is important to understand that many of those assets are contributions to the Permanent Fund for which only a portion of the earnings can be spent on Foundation programs. Also, while contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are spent on Foundation programs each year, the Trustees invest those contributions for three years before they are spent on Foundation programs. The Trustees maintain an operating reserve fund to assure TRF’s stability in times of economic downturn, unexpected emergency, or necessary expense. The Trustees must operate in a moderately conservative fashion because of their fiduciary responsibility for managing TRF’s funds.
