Rob, we are also particularly pleased that your
RRFC colleagues from around the world can share in this occasion
with you this afternoon. We welcome everyone today—the family of
Rotary. |
|
On behalf of President Glenn, Rotary
International’s Directors, Chairman Carlo, the Foundation’s
Trustees, and especially the many beneficiaries of your kindness,
our deepest thanks Rob, for your generosity and your leadership. |
|
|
Please relay our greetings and warm
appreciation to Eileen for her commitment to The Rotary Foundation.
We all know Rotary and Foundation leaders’ spouses have no small
task; they graciously share their spouses’ time with our Rotary
family. I am certain that the Foundation leaders involved in RRFC
training are acutely aware of this. Please, Rob, let Eileen know
that we appreciate her support. |
|
The Trustees recently agreed to name this
section of the Hall of Honor the Arch C. Klumph Gallery in honor of
The Rotary Foundation’s founder, Past RI President Arch C. Klumph
who served in Rotary’s highest capacity in 1916-17. The Gallery is
reserved for significant major donors who, like Rob and Eileen, have
invested in the vision of a more peaceful world through The Rotary
Foundation’s humanitarian and educational programs. |
|
|
Every one of these pictures has a story. Today,
we have the pleasure of recognizing Rob and Eileen for their
generous gifts to help fulfill the mission of our Rotary Foundation,
and inducting them into the Arch C. Klumph Gallery. |
|
Here is the Rob Brown Story—Rob was born in
Scottsville, New York, USA. He studied at the State University of
New York Maritime College where he received a Bachelors Degree in
marine transportation. He sailed with the Merchant Marines,
obtaining a Master’s License for ocean going vessels. He came ashore
and worked as an operations manager for a shipping company. |
|
In 1983, Rob co-founded Baltimore’s first
urgent care medical practice, Physicians Promptcare. Engaged as both
a consultant and an investor in a variety of organizations, Rob most
recently served as president and CEO of Venture Plastics, a plastic
injection molding company. |
|
Rob began his Rotary story in 1989 when he
joined the Towsontowne, Maryland, USA club. He served as club
secretary in 1991-92 and as president in 1994-95. Rob became
involved at the district level in 1995-96, when he was a governor’s
representative. In 1999-2000 he served as Governor of District 7620. |
|
Rob has served on the District’s Scholarships,
RYLA, and membership committees, and he chaired the District Rotary
Foundation Committee from 2001-03. The Rotary Foundation is truly
fortunate to have him entering his third year as RRFC for Zone 32. |
|
Rob is currently a RI Representative to the
Organization of American States. He was a member of both the UN
Delegation and Diplomatic Relations Committee and the World
Community Service Programs Task Force in 2001-02. |
|
With his clear interest in international
programs, it is no surprise that Rob has generously and consistently
supported the World Fund. The Browns have also funded the Robert S.
and Eileen Brown World Peace Fellowship. They are very interesting
in supporting this program and inspiring others to do the same. |
|
I asked Rob last night “what made you give to
The Rotary Foundation?” He responded, “Osmosis—they just kept
asking!” As RRFCs I am sure you can all take a lot from that story!
Keep asking! |
|
Rob, the photograph of you and Eileen joins
over 100 honorees who have made gifts ranging from US$250,000 to
over US$7 million. Donors come from all parts of the globe—from
India, Dubai, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, USA, Italy, Korea, Germany,
Philippines, England, Canada, and Kenya. Their gifts represent
nearly 10% of all contributions made to The Rotary Foundation. They
share a common and united commitment with you –to create a more
humane and peaceful world through The Rotary Foundation’s programs. |
|
Arch
Through this event today, you also become
charter members of the Arch C. Klumph Society. Congratulations and
thank you for sharing your time and resources with our Rotary
Foundation. With great pleasure I welcome RRFC Rob Brown to share
his comments. |
 |
 |
|
Remarks from RRFC Rob Brown:
Comments in bold are paraphrased
I want to thank the senior Rotary leaders the
RRFCs, and the family of Rotary for taking time from your busy
schedules to share this moment with me. My fellow RRFCs had no
choice. Chairman-elect Frank has challenged us once again to Create
Awareness and Take Action. So here we are! |
|
This not about my wife Eileen or me, rather it
is a celebration for those we will never know, who can be helped by
the good works of The Rotary Foundation. |
|
I have had my share of bumps on the road of
life. Hopefully they made me a better person. I have also been
blessed with more than my share of good fortune, which is one of the
reasons we are here today. |
|
|
Another reason we are here today goes back to a
gentleman some of you may have know, Jim Buchanan/. His picture is
here on these walls and until recently his was the largest gift The
Rotary Foundation had ever received. Jim was a member of my Rotary
District. He said he did it to encourage others to give. |
|
|
While our gift is not of the same magnitude as
Jim’s, it is being done with a similar thought. Encourage others
This is about giving, or in the words of our motto: Service Above
Self. As evidenced by our polio eradication campaign, we are setting
new standards of what volunteers can do. |
|
We are RRFCs and senior leaders in The Rotary
Foundation need to lead by example when it is in our financial
means. Chairman-elect Frank asked why I give to The Rotary
Foundation. |
|
RRFC Brown told a meaningful story about a GSE
team from Japan that came to his district. The team worked with
families in his district who were employed in the Pentagon. After
the events of September 11, he received a significant gift from the
clubs represented on the GSE team. This was a Rotary interaction
that left a deep impression on him and taught him how true
philanthropy comes from the heart. |
|
My own interest is in the World Peace Scholar
program, which I believe has the potential to save and change lives
like no other Foundation program. This is for our grandchildren and
the children of the world. |
|
But his is not to say that the other programs
of our Foundation are not equally important. As RRFCs we must
continue to promote our Foundation’s programs, to educate those with
whom we are in contact, and to share stories of the benefits of
doing good in the world. |
|
|
What a wonderful legacy if some day it can be
said: “Yes, he gave freely of his time, his talents and financial
resources to help our Foundation “Doing good in the world.”
Thank you again for sharing this time with me. |
|
Trustee Chairman-elect Devlyn:
Thank you, Rob, for your thoughts. Now, we are
deeply honored to induct you into this community of donors, and I
invite you to hang your photograph on the wall of the Arch C. Klumph
Gallery, and I invite the Past Presidents to join me. (The velvet
drape is removed to reveal the framed photo on the easel. The Brown
photograph is hung on the Gallery wall with Trustee Chairman-elect
Devlyn’s assistance). |

 |

 |
|
|
Trustee Chairman-elect Devlyn:
Ladies and gentlemen, join me in congratulating
and thanking the newest member of the Arch Klumph Society
(applause). |
