UK-Malaysian youth exchange demonstrates flexibility of program from: Rotary World-2001/07 |

Unlike most Youth Exchangees on long-term exchanges, Ruth Chubb never attended school during the year she just completed in Malaysia. Yet the 19-year-old from Bournemouth, England, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Highcliffe on Sea, enjoyed a dynamic learning opportunity. A flexible exchange allowed her to spend time in service to her host community.
Ruth travelled to Kota Kinabalu, on Borneo, during her "gap" year between secondary school and university. A dyslexic who hopes to help other dyslexics someday, she immediately volunteered to tutor learning-disabled persons through the local society for the deaf. She also cared for infants at an orphanage and directed a school play, among other activities.
The fact that she could not speak Malaysian posed no stumbling block to her service activities, her stays with host families from different ethnic groups, or her enjoyment of Chinese New Year and Hari Raya holidays together with newfound friends. Ruth said she was "fully immersed in the Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures."
A former Interactor, Ruth joined the Rotaract Club of Kota Kinabalu and took part in a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program. At the invitation of her host Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu, she visited its sister club in Taiwan, got a firsthand look at a remote Malaysian village assisted by the Kota Kinabalu club, and attended the district conference.
"Every moment that I have spent in this incredible country has been of great value to me," said Ruth, whose experiences ranged from mountain climbing to emceeing a Rotary talent contest to speaking on sex education to a family planning conference. "I have learnt to be more independent and self-reliant."
