¡§Snowflakes are one of the nature¡¦s most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together.¡¨ ¡V Vesta Kelly ¡§One day at a time ¡V this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it would be worth remembering.¡¨ ¡V Ida Scott Taylor ¡@ The success of DisCon 2003 depends on the collective efforts of the member clubs. ¡@ ¡@ |

The numbers are growing and they tell the story. Two days before the event, almost 250 Rotarians have already pre-registered for the District 3870 Convention 2003. This was gathered from ADG Carmelo ¡§Mel¡¨ Borja, handling the event promotions. On the other hand, Rtn. Neil Manus, Chairperson of the Registration Committee is optimistic that this could double and reach the 500-delegation mark by registration day on April 3, 2003. PAG Jose ¡§Joe¡¨ N. Nebrao, Chairman of the 19th District Conference, observes that eight years has lapsed since the last Discon hosting by the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro way back in 1995. Rtn. Casimira ¡§Myra¡¨ V. Balandra, Chairperson of the DisCon Bulletin Committee, enjoins all Rotarians to contribute their thoughts to the special DisCon 2003 Bulletin. Articles may be submitted in the special work room allocated at the Xavier Sports & Country Club. Above it all, Host Club RI West CDO Pres. Rodolfo ¡§Rudy¡¨ Menes notes that despite the challenges and the demands of the preparation, he is confident of a successful DisCon this year. PDG Dens W.L. Shao represents RI President for DisCon 2003
The RI President¡¦s representative is PDG Dens W.L. Shao, an accomplished dental physician, an astute businessman and a distinguished Rotarian. At present, he is a director of William Dental Clinic and President of Lon an Dental Laboratory. With his commitment to translate and write Rotary training materials and his enviable 18 consecutive years of 100% attendance record, he will surely give every DISCON participant a clear ¡§Picture of the Rotary Worldwide¡¨! XAVIER SPORTS & COUNTRY CLUB
The Club is within reach from schools for nursery, grade school and high school, church, top rated golf course, the SM mall, convenience stores and gasoline station. Sprawled on a panoramic 240-hectare plateau, this imposing 1.6-hectare property overlooks the Macajalar Bay, the Cagayan de Oro River, and the City of Cagayan de Oro.
The Xavier Sports & Country Club offers sports facilities to include a swimming pool for adults and another for kids, a bowling center, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, indoor and outdoor sports halls, a game room and fitness centers for men and women. To support the city¡¦s culture and arts, the Club also offers ample space areas for exhibitions.
Generally, it is a meeting for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more meaningful and rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the conference. Every one of Rotary¡¦s more than 500 districts has a district conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the International president always sends a knowledgeable Rotarian to represent him and address each conference. One of the unexpected benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become acquainted with members of the other Rotary clubs and also with the members of one¡¦s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference. The governor-nominee is usually selected in advance and certified to the General Secretary so no election for governor is needed. Instead, the Governor-nominee with the current presidents of the clubs in the district get together to agree on the site of the district conference for the year of the governor-nominee in advance. By approval of the board, the district may also select the site of the district conference for the year of a governor-nominee¡¦s service by the vote of the governor-nominee and a majority of those who will serve as presidents during the same year. A district conference may adopt recommendations upon matters of importance to the district provided such action shall be in accordance with the constitution and by-laws in keeping with the spirit and principles of Rotary. To one and all ¡V welcome and enjoy your participation of the 19th Rotary District 3870 Conference!
The successful Rotary club is not only one which has many members, for this is merely a quantitative achievement. What is more important is the ¡§quality¡¨ of the individuals who have joined the Rotary club. Have these individuals imbibed the precepts and ideals of Rotary? Have they improved themselves and in so doing, increased their capacity to serve others? The ultimate goal of membership development in any Rotary club should be ¡§Personal Growth¡¨ for all its members. This is Personal Growth in the three major areas: Managerial skills, Personality Improvement, and Self-Actualization. Being involved, Rotarians become more effective individuals in whatever they do. They learn how to set and achieve goals, how to better manage time, how to plan more realistically. They learn how to raise funds for a worthy cause. They acquire a project orientation and in effect become effective project managers. Most important, they learn how to persuade fellow volunteers to serve in a variety of ways. Rotarians also evolve a new personality. They become friendlier, more cheerful, more sociable, more tactful and diplomatic, more persuasive and convincing, more thoughtful, helpful, and ready to serve in almost every worthwhile activity. Most importantly, Rotarians can transform lives dramatically because it is a real opportunity for helping others, which is the secret of a happy life. Most individuals usually devote their lives to their dreams and ambitions for knowledge, wealth, power and success. When they join Rotary, they soon realize that there are other finer values to pursue, not only knowledge but also wisdom, not only wealth but also charity, not only power but also compassion, and not only success but also humility. Wisdom, charity, compassion and humility are some of the finer values and lasting goals of life¡¦s journey. And these are the goals of membership development in Rotary.
