Ladies and
Gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you a fellow Rotarian, our host
today. He is so popular here in Taipei. He has so much personal
charm that many Taiwanese, both young and old, especially women, idolize him
as a rock star. A few years ago, he came to deliver a speech at Rotary’s
Zone Institute. Before he left the hotel, about 20 young women heard
that he was here. They immediately surrounded him and screamed, as if they
saw American actor Tom Cruise.
He is popular
not because of his appearance, but also his academic background and his
achievement as the mayor of Taipei. He was born in 1950, in Hong
Kong. After graduating from the National Taiwan University with a law
degree, he left for the United States, and earned his Master of law at New
York University Law School and his JD from Harvard University Law
School. He worked as a lawyer for several large firms in the US before
returning to Taiwan. He spent 18 years working for the national
government, first as minister of justice, and then as minister of State.
In 1998, he defeated Chen Shuibian, our current president during his
reelection campaign for mayor. I was told the reason he won the election
because most of the women in Taipei cast their votes for him.
He
is not only a popular political leader, but also a scholar, who has written
many articles and taught law at the prestigious Chengchi University Law
School.
During his
office, he has made Taipei a national cultural and artistic center. His
passion for running has motivated many people to be more health conscious.
He is a member
of my club, the Rotary Club of Taipei. His Rotary nickname is Rotarian
Justice.
Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome our host, Mayor Ma
Ying Jiu. |
