RI President Mr. Glen Estess, PRIVP Gary, Rotary International officers, all the Taiwan Rotarians, ladies and gentlemen,

國際Glenn E.Estess.Sr. RI 社長、GARY 黃其光原RI副社長及各位國際扶輪社前輩、台灣扶輪社友們，大家好!欣逢扶輪100週年紀念，在此先致上誠摯祝賀之意。

国際ロータリー グレン・エステスsr.会長、ゲーリー・ファン元副会長、そして国際ロータリー役員の皆様、台湾のロータリアンの皆様、さらにここにお集まりの全ての方々と共にロータリーの100周年を心からお祝い申します。

 

At its 100th year, Rotary is a rare institution.

在扶輪100週年紀念之際，能夠來貴國參與真是非常難得的事。

ロータリー100年の時にここに存在しているということは稀なことで、

 

Using the language of my Tea Ceremony profession, this is what we call a “once in a lifetime event.”

以我的職業--茶道的專業用語來說，就是「一期一會」的盛事，這樣的機會不會再有第二次。

私の職業である茶道の言葉で言えばまさに一期一会ということであり、 このような機会は2度と訪れないのであります。

 

I am honored to be invited and sincerely appreciate the opportunity today to speak on the topic of the “Future of Rotary” today.

而在這樣寶貴的時刻之中，很榮幸能夠受邀前來，並賦予我針對『扶輪社的未來』演講的機會，實在非常感謝。

この貴重な機会に私をお招きいただき、“ロータリーの未来”について、スピーチする機会を与えていただきましたことを光栄に存じ心より感謝いたしております。

（はじめに）

Welcoming Rotary’s 100th year, the Weekly Bulletin of my Kyoto Rotary Club has this written “Another Hundred to Follow.”

在迎接扶輪社100週年的今年，我特地請所屬的京都扶輪社在社刊的首頁上刊登『百百向一步』。

ロータリーが100周年を迎えたこの年、私は自分が所属している京都ロータリークラブの週報の巻頭言に「百々向一歩」という言葉を書かせていただいた。

 

This is to imply that Rotary has completed its first 100 years and is now taking the first new step into the next 100 year.

這樣的一句話是因為我覺得扶輪社雖然迎接了100年，今後在面對新的100年之際，我們應該踏出健全的第一步，所以才有感而發的寫在社刊上。

これはロータリーが100年を迎えて新たな100年に向って行くのに、 その最初の一歩を健全に踏み出していこうという思いで書いたのである。

 

100 years ago, Paul Harris and three friends formed the foundation of Rotary. Based on the ideals of “ Charity, Forgiveness and Tolerance,” built fellowship among fellow men to make the world a better place.

100年前扶輪社的創始者保羅˙哈里斯和他三個朋友結成了一個團體，以”慈愛、寬容、忍耐”照亮了人們的心靈，並與這些人們一同擴展友誼，進一步希望能為社會的改善付出一些心力。

100年前、ロータリーの創始者ポール・ハリスは3人の友人と共に1つの　　　グループを結成し、“慈愛・寛容・忍耐”を人々の心に灯し、その人々と共に、友情の輪を拡げ、それによって共に社会の改善をはかろうとしたのである。

 

From Chicago, Rotary has expanded across the United States, Canada and then to the world. Today, Rotary is the world’s largest charitable organization.由芝加哥首度設立扶輪社之後，開始蔓延全美各地，更波及到加拿大及英國，扶輪社目前已經成為世界屈指的服務團體之一了。

シカゴでのクラブ創設がやがて全米各地にひろがり、カナダやイギリスにも波及し、 今や世界屈指の奉仕団体となっている。

Before we discuss about the future we must first go back to the beginning, to the ideals of “ Charity, Forgiveness and Tolerance.” These ideals must be preached to the public.

今後在思考扶輪的意義時，首先回到扶輪的原點，最重要的事情是向人們宣示我們以保羅˙哈里斯的基本思想”慈愛、寬容、忍耐”作為我們的生活態度。

これからのロータリーを考えるにあたって、まず第１には、ロータリーの原点に戻り、ポール・ハリスの思想に根ざした“慈愛・寛容・忍耐”という生き方を人々に示していくことが大切である。

 

The revival of the individual Rotarians-

扶輪人的自覺性－

ロータリアン各人の自覚－

 

A Rotarian should be self-motivated.

其次是每一個扶輪會員必須秉持著有身為真正扶輪人的自覺性，過著扶輪人的生活。

次に1人1人のロータリー会員が真のロータリアンとしての自覚をもって　クラブライフを歩むこと。

 

He or she should not only participate in club activities but also try to be active in district or inter-club events.

不僅是身為扶輪人，還必須積極參與扶輪社的任務、地區的義務、以及與其他扶輪社之交流活動。

唯、クラブ会員というだけでなく、積極的にクラブの役割、地区の役割、他のクラブとの交流などに参加していくこと。

 

Reflection of the past-

反省過往－

過去の反省－

 

Increase our membership may be important but perhaps more meaningful should be our ability to attract like-minded, innovative members.

增強會員陣容固然重要，但會員必須是認同的人。

会員増強も勿論大切なことであるが、①のような生き方を受け入れてくれる人を会員にしなければならない。

 

Active pursuit of quality is more important than the increase in quantity.

不一昧增加人數，重要的是應發掘真正的扶輪人，邀請其入會。

唯、単に数を頼むのではなく、真のロータリアンになり得る人を発見し、勧誘することが大切。

 

Expanding the leadership-

增強指導性－

指導性の拡大－

 

In the past, Rotary has been centered in the United States In the future, Rotary in individual countries should become more proactive, more independent.

過去100年都是以美國主導其他扶輪社之成長，今後更重要的是各國扶輪社都應該能獨立自主。

過去100年はロータリーを生み育てたアメリカが中心になり主導されて　きたが、これからは各国ロータリーが自主独立していくことが大切。

 

The Unity of Rotary-

扶輪一體化－

ロータリーの一体化－

 

If regional Rotary can become more proactive , the institution of Rotary then should then be reformed using the bottom up approach rather than then top down approach.

並非以國際扶輪(芝加哥的One Rotary Center)的Top Down方式，而是必須把各社作為一個單位，以獨立自主的社去形成地區，再擴張至區域、甚至國際組織之Bottom Up 的方式。

国際ロータリー（シカゴのワンロータリーセンター）のTop Downの方式　　ではなく、各クラブが単位であり、自立したクラブが地区を形成し、ゾーンに拡がり、さらに国際組織に波及していくというBottom Upの形が必要である。

 

Contribution to World Peace and mankind-

對世界和平及人類有所貢獻－

世界平和と人類への貢献－

 

Rotary should work with the United Nations and other NGOs to further their contribution to the world.

其他，應多協助聯合國或NGO義工團體，共同進行各種以和平、人道服務、新世代教育為重點的活動。

その他、国際連合や他のNGOボランティア団体とも協力し、平和、人道的　　奉仕、新世代教育などを重点的に協働して（共に）活動をすすめていきたい。

 

In conclusion,

hailing the 100th year of Rotary, I would like to use one word to summarize my thoughts for the next 100 year of this great institution. This word is “together”. I have for this occasion composed a poem to express “ Togetherness.”

迎接100週年，邁向全新100年，我們扶輪人的Key Word是『一同Together』，在此介紹一首表達此意義的歌曲。

100周年を迎え、新たな100年に向おうとする我々ロータリアンに聞えて　くるKey Wardは“共に（Together）”であり、このことを表わしている詩を紹介したい。

While mountains protect you, clouds float with you

Together with you for as long as you live

生きているかぎり　いっしょだよ

No matter, the world is happy to be “together with you”

無論如何  世界有你在一起才會快樂

なにしろーーーー世界は、「きみといっしょ」がうれしいんだ

 

The World is vast and beautiful, and it holds you within

世界又大又美  因為世界有你

世界は広くて美しい、世界の中にきみがいる

 

Let us go to meet the world, where together we will live within
