Rotary's Family Week (3-9 February) resonates with the Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Central Couples, Jharkhand, India. Young married couples comprise the 22-member club, perhaps a first for Rotary.
Before becoming charter president, Mahesh Singhania belonged to the sponsoring Rotary Club of Jamshedpur. Sandeep Narang, governor of District 3250, says that Singhania had been urging friends and business associates to join his club, but the average age of members - over 50 - and the average number of years members waited before joining the board - traditionally 10 - discouraged younger people.
With support from the Jamshedpur club, Singhania and 2001-02 Assistant Governor Ronald D'Costa began talking to couples about a new Rotary club. "The wives seemed more enthusiastic," comments Narang, and their interest led to the suggestion of a couples club, "an idea that spread like wildfire." Within a week, 11 couples had signed up.
"They felt a couples club was going to be great fun," Narang says, "and they knew that if the members had fun, service would follow." Even before the club's chartering on 31 July 2002, the couples began forming an Interact club, a Rotary Community Corps, and a sewing circle for underprivileged girls.
Past RI Director Antonio "Tony" Serrano presented the new club with its charter while on Rotary business in India.
"Their enthusiasm for Rotary was dynamic," Serrano exclaims about the members, all of whom are professionals, and many of whom have children.
The club someday may have to think about admitting or retaining single people. For now, it has eight more couples eager to join and build a family tradition.
