The first anniversary event has been planned for over 20 years. It is the completion of the PolioPlus program. In 1985, when our polio efforts were adopted, PolioPlus was designated to be a “birthday gift to the people of the world” to celebrate Rotary’s 100th Anniversary. We are coming closer to that dream — truly, the successful conclusion of PolioPlus will be the most historic event in Rotary’s Centennial celebration.

Polio eradication fundraising campaign launched

Launched at the RI Convention in Barcelona, a new, one-year Rotary campaign to raise US$80 million for polio eradication, called Fulfilling Our Promise: Eradicate Polio, is under way. Rotary's more than 30,000 clubs are being asked to provide cash and pledges above and beyond their Annual Programs Fund contributions in order to help plug the $275 million funding gap that threatens to derail Rotary's goal of eradication by 2005.

Former RI General Secretary Herb Pigman directs the campaign, which was launched by a unanimous decision of the RI Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Trustees. Past President Luis Vicente Giay chairs the International Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign Committee. Pigman said that while the number of polio cases worldwide had plummeted 99 percent since 1988, "the last 1 percent reduction is the most expensive. The global partners will need to spend a billion dollars to achieve it."

Of the $1 billion needed to complete eradication, $725 million is pledged or projected. The remaining $275 million is expected to come from governments, the private sector, and Rotary's $80 million - part of which will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank. Rotary's $80 million will be in addition to the nearly $500 million Rotary has already committed to eradication by 2005.

Each Rotary club is expected to set its own fundraising goal for the new campaign and reach it through cash donations, pledges (up to three years), and community fundraisers. Assistance will be provided by new district polio eradication fundraising committees and 2,500 area coordinators who will visit every Rotary club early this Rotary year to present the campaign message. For the duration of the campaign (the 2002-03 Rotary year), the PolioPlus Partners program is being suspended. Launched in 1995 to allow Rotarians to support supplemental needs of national immunization days and poliovirus surveillance, PolioPlus Partners raised more than $33 million to support more than 270 projects in more than 80 countries, ranging from providing vaccine carriers for Ghana to equipping polio laboratories in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.

The Polio Eradication Private Sector Initiative, a joint effort of The Rotary Foundation and the United Nations Foundation to seek major gifts from corporations, philanthropists, and foundations, now directed by Past District Governor Jack Blane, will continue operating through 2002. The private sector has contributed more than $112 million.
