Relying on only each other (instead of footholds or ropes) for assistance, RYLA participants scale a wall in an activity that reinforces the importance of teamwork.

With the goal of developing today's youth into tomorrow's leaders, the RYLA Committee of District 6450 (Illinois, USA) brought together nearly 50 young adults from the Chicago region for a two-day event in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. The RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) participants - primarily Interactors and Youth Exchange students - engaged in a variety of guided activities focusing on communication, problem solving, and leadership.

Staff from an adventure learning center and Rotarians mediated small-group discussions in which the RYLArians set goals and talked about what it takes to be a leader. Organizers led team-building exercises that required communication and cooperation. In a motivational speech, Dr. Terrence Bartolini, of the Rotary Club of Oak Lawn, Illinois, urged the RYLArians to be passionate and positive.

"The weekend was challenging," says one participant, "but it pushed people to go past their limits and discover they can do more. Our team worked very well together, and the trust we had in each other was much greater than I had expected. It was great fun, and I made lots of friends to work with in the future."
