For José Servián Renna, of Asunción, Paraguay, a Group Study Exchange tour to India in 1994 opened up a new world of Rotary service.

"Seeing the Rotarians working in the immunization against polio and giving meals to the population in the fight against poverty, I felt that when returning to my country I should belong to this entity of service," said Renna, an electromechanical engineer. "A little later, I and former scholars were invited to form the Rotary Club of Asunción Palma, Central, and in 1996 I became its first president."

In 1999, Renna coordinated a project that brought free eye care to Itauguá, Paraguay, an extremely poor area near Asunción, in cooperation with a US organization called Voluntary Optometry Services for Humanity (VOSH). Previously, the Asunción Palma club had received an offer from Dr. Bud Falkenhain of the Rotary Club of Rolla, Missouri, USA, to help arrange VOSH's services in Paraguay.

Asunción Palma Rotarians enlisted volunteer interpreters for the VOSH team and sponsored a clinic to evaluate people for eye care. Led by Falkenhain, the VOSH team provided eye examinations to more than 870 people and free eyeglasses to all those needing them.

"Since then, we have helped people who left their homes because of the flooding of the Paraguay River, giving them medical attention and food in their emergency camp," said Renna of his club's ongoing commitment to serving others. "We have also made grants to help outstanding people for a variety of activities in our community, and proposed members for GSE teams that traveled as ambassadors of goodwill to Bolivia and Virginia, USA."
